There was a little turtle...

After spending some time talking about rabbit homes and bird homes,
we began talking about the homes other animals build.  We eventually
ended up talking about turtles.  The students were so excited about
turtles, we began learning about turtle homes.

The JK's built a turtle habitat out of paper and cardboard and
started making turtles out of rocks to put in their habitat.

We looked at pictures of what turtle shells really looked like
to give us ideas when we were painting the rocks.

The JK's were so proud of their work and the SK's wanted to be part of it too.
Everyone who made a turtle let their turtle live in the pond!
Our next step is to write about our turtles.  Many of them wanted to name
their turtle and they made up all sorts of stories about their turtles.

The SK's started designing their own turtle shells
that they could actually wear.  They read about
the patterns on real turtle shells to give them ideas.

"My shell has spikes to protect itself."

"These spikes will keep predators away."

"My shell just has spikes at the edges."

The JK's wanted shells too...

"I want to be a teenage mutant ninja turtle."

"I'm Donatello!"

"Let's make a house for the turtles."
"Here is my ipod."
"I need an ipod too!"
(The blue and yellow blocks were the turtle ipods.)

The ramps and blocks were rocks in their 'pond'.

"Get in your shell...predator!"

"I'm trying to make a jaw that has 'like a beak thing' so it can
crack open crab shells."

By the end of the week, almost everyone had made a turtle shell...
