Write, write and write some more!

We have been talking a lot about animal homes and learning more about different animals.  We focused on turtles for quite a while.  During that time we learned a lot about turtles and wrote down what we know.  We made a list of what
Turtles can...
Turtles are...
Turtles have...
Little 'books' were put out at the writing centre during playtime.  Some students referred to the charts to write their books and others chose their own ideas.  Here is what they did...

Turtles have different colours.

Turtles can snap.
Turtles can go in the ocean.

The turtle is swimming.  Turtles can snap.

Turtles are slow.

Turtles are reptiles.

Turtles can eat insects.

Turtles can swim underwater

Turtles can lay eggs.

Turtles can eat worms and insects.

Turtles can swim.  Tortoises do not.

Turtles can live in a pond.

This writing activity really got them interested in making their own books.  I put 'books' in the writing center (paper stapled together) and they really got creative.  Notice the different stages of early writing development.

Stage 1
First students begin to understand that the lines on the paper can symbolize something else (ex. cat/house).  They understand there is a difference between the pictures and the words.  You will see drawings with 'scribble' underneath representing the words.

Stage 2
They start to understand that text and printed materials have meaning.  They use random letters and spaces to represent the words in their writing.

Stage 3
Instead of random letters, children write the sounds they hear. They begin using words in their environment and words they know.

You will see different students at different stages in their writing.  Please remember everyone learns at their own pace...this is the beauty of play based learning and differentiated instruction.  Everyone has the opportunity to write, whatever stage they are at!  Even the students who are hesitant to write have chosen on their own to participate in these activities, writing about things that are important to them!

Here is some more writing...
