Need your teeth cleaned?

After discovering a few of our students were afraid to go to the dentist we decided to have some dentist dramatic play.  We read some books about going the dentist and shared stories of our own visits to the dentist.  After that the kids that were interested made a list of what they thought should be in our JK/SK dental office:
tools
secretary for paying
waiting room
chairs
trays
computers
phone
glasses
bib
prize box
light
x-ray machine

"This is the secretaries desk...we have a phone and a computer..."
"The names of the people coming are in the computer..."
"If you want your teeth cleaned you can call us..."
"Don't forget your money...you need to pay."

"Here is a tv.  Waiting rooms should always have a tv."

"My sign says, 'no scremin'".

We checked out some fake teeth with real dental tools so everyone
had a chance to hold and feel the real mirror and explorer used to
count their teeth.

"Our dentist office has no tools...we need tools."

"Here is my mirror and explorer..."

"Open wide...it looks like you have been brushing good..."
Notice the piping for the suction and water.

The dental office was a  busy place...

"No germs for me!"

"I'm a dentist!"

"I just need to count your teeth..."

Ninja dentist #1

Ninja dentist #2

We learned that children have 10 teeth on the bottom and 10 teeth on the top.
We made our mouths using clay and white beans.  The white beans were
clean, healthy teeth.

"I need to pull this tooth...it's rotten."

"Look...the black beans can be rotten teeth...teeth with cavities."

"The marshmallows are my teeth."

Don't forget to brush and floss!
