Before the holidays we read The Gingerbread Pirates. The kids enjoyed the story so much that I promised we would read more Gingerbread stories after the holidays. We started with the basics...The Gingerbread Man.
Run, run as fast as you can,
You can't catch me,
I'm the Gingerbread man!"
Instead of reading the story from a book, we used magnetic characters and props to tell the story. The children loved it and by the end they had all sorts of ideas of how to change the story. They thought they would want to eat the gingerbread man instead of the fox.
So..they found their magnetic pictures and added themselves into the story.
Someone suggested we add different animals into the story to chase the gingerbread man, so they began making new characters...
They added a worm...
...and a whale, and a dinosaur...
...a penguin...
Someone even wanted there to be a Gingerbread Girl.
We had to read The Gingerbread Girl the next day.
I'll run and I'll run, with a leap and twirl
You can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Girl!
It was a hit...especially with the girls.
During the week they made books.
They used play dough.
They played dice games.
They made gingerbread crafts.
They made puppets.
We even had a minion gingerbread man.
They made letters and words on salt trays.
"Mine is G for my name and for Gingerbread Man."
Another day we read, The Gingerbread Cowboy. The children started
making cowboy hats for our magnetic characters.
"I will make the cowboy fox...he will need a hat too."
"This is my gingerbread cowboy. He is going to catch the
fox with his lasso."
The children told and re-told the stories in so many different ways...
...it was FANTASTIC!
We had so much fun we might need to read more Gingerbread stories next week.
Here are the links to some of the stories we read if you want to hear them again.
