3, 2, 1...Blast off!

3, 2, 1, Blast Off!

One of the boys asked if he could make a rocket out of craft supplies.  We looked around to see if we had the materials he needed.  He decided he didn't know what he needed and I decided we didn't have enough time to start a big project, because it was almost time to tidy up.

So...the next day I brought pictures of rockets for him to look at.  Many children were interested in looking at the rocket pictures.  They began designing their own rockets.  Since we have been learning about three dimensional solids someone noticed that a rocket was made of a cylinder and a cone.

Most children began with a drawing, then started crafting their rocket.  Some children named their rocket and others gave their rocket a number (great practice of number and letter recognition).

Another day we watched a video clip of an astronaut in the International Space Station.  We saw how astronauts brushed their teeth, cried, ate and slept in space.  We also watched a launch of a space shuttle.  Suddenly everyone wanted their rocket to have a space shuttle to take to space.  They figured out a way to make their shuttles come off using a paper clip, so their rocket could 'burn up' and the shuttle would reach outer space.
In the pictures below you will see everything I just described to you.  You will also see a space station built out of  blocks (it was actually a house built by a group of girls, but had a great 'launch pad' area for rockets).

The children are pretty excited about space so I'm sure there will be more exciting space discoveries next week too!
