COLOURS EVERYWHERE!
The students have been exploring with colours in our classroom. Today we read a story called, Mouse Paint. In the story the mice step in paint and change the colour of their fur. They each start as one of the primary colours (red, blue, yellow) and as they step in paint puddles they begin mixing the colours...
...and so did we...
We mixed with paint....
| "I used red and yellow and I made an x." |
| "Mine has some orange, look!" |
| "This is an owl...she has some yellow, some red and some orange." |
"If I fold mine and mix it, I will wreck my picture.
I'm going to keep mine with just orange and just red." |
We mixed with shaving cream...
"Can I have blue food colouring and yellow food colouring?"
"What colour do you think the shaving cream will turn?"
"Let's see....it's green!!!" |

| "Mine is turning purple!" |
| "I can see swirls...there's red yellow and green!" |
| "Mine is turning green!" |
"I have red and you have yellow...let's mix!"
The boys gave each other a high five. Shaving cream went flying but they discovered ORANGE! |
| "Mine is green too!" |
| "I made green letters!" |
| High Five |
| "Can you see my E?" |
| "My blue and red made purple." |
"Ahhhhhh I'm green!"
"Mine is mixing. If you mix colours you can make new colours."
"I made an O!"
"Look at all of my colours!"
| "Mine is turning orange...I put yellow and red and now it's orange!" |
We mixed with water...
| "I'm making ice cubes." |
"Yellow and blue made green water!!! I bet the ice cubes will be green."
We put our ice cubes in the freezer to see what would happen.
| Sure enough, the water froze...and the green water did make green ice cubes. |
We mixed with ice cubes...
| "I am going to mix blue and green ice cubes. Maybe when they melt the water will be greeny-blue." |
"When the blue and yellow ice cubes melt, I think the water will be green."
"You are right because when you mix blue and yellow, you get green."
Many students knew that these ice cubes would melt and turn back into water. Some children thought that if you mixed the different coloured ice cubes, you would get rainbow water when they melted. Their faces were priceless when they discovered the change that occurred.
