Bowling through week one!

What an amazing first week for our kindergarten students.  They were experimenting and exploring immediately.  The kids noticed that the blocks were the same as last year, but there were three new wooden balls in the block bin.  It didn't take long for them to decide what to do...

It started as a simple bowling alley.

They decided it needed some pins or something to knock over.
"We are bowling at Kinderhouse"
"If you knock the blocks down you get points."
They tried making a tunnel for the ball to go under.
"The ball won't fit..."

"You have to go over it because the ball doesn't fit under."
"The only way to get the ball over is to make a ramp."
They tried different kinds of ramps..."You need bigger ramps to make the ball go over."
"The ball keeps falling off the edge."
"Let's make a wall so the ball stays in."
"Then it will always hit the blocks down and we can always get points."

We added a basket of different sized balls to see how this would impact their exploration.
They discovered very quickly that the white ball didn't knock over very many blocks.
"Maybe because it's got holes in it."
"Maybe because it's so light."

"Look, these balls are the same.  They will both hit down lots of blocks!"
"Heavy balls will knock more blocks down...we don't need those light ones."

We "bowled" our way through week one.
